Short Bio of Dr. Suqin Ge

Dr. Suqin Ge is a Professor of Economics at Virginia Tech and the Inaugural Director of the Center for Future Work Places and Practices. She is currently President-Elect of the Chinese Economists Society in the U.S., Co-Editor of China Economic Review, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Labor Economics. Previously, she served as Vice President of the Chinese Economists Society (2023–2024) and as Deputy Head of the Department of Economics at Virginia Tech (2021–2023). She has also been a visiting researcher at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Academia Sinica in Taiwan, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research.


Dr. Suqin Ge received her bachelor’s degree from Southeast University, her master’s degree in economics from Fudan University, and her Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota. Her research spans labor economics, the Chinese economy, and applied microeconomics. Her work has focused on education and income inequality, examining topics such as the returns to higher education in labor and marriage markets, the impact of education quality on career and family outcomes, and gender differences in educational returns. She has also made wide-ranging contributions to research on the Chinese economy, including studies of wage structure changes, female labor force participation, savings behavior, rural-urban migration, and population aging. More recently, she has also been investigating the multifaceted impacts of emerging technologies on the labor market.


Her research has been published in leading international journals such as the Journal of Labor EconomicsJournal of the European Economic AssociationEuropean Economic ReviewJournal of Applied EconometricsJournal of Economic Behavior & Organization, and Journal of Comparative Economics. Her work has been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Labor, the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and has been featured in media outlets such as The Atlantic, NBC, The Washington Post, CBS, and Bloomberg. In 2015, she was named a U.S. Department of Labor Scholar.
